Funding Opportunities 

All research incurs costs, whether it's the time spent designing the project and writing the proposal, hiring personnel to collect data, funding consumables and office space, or paying for the involvement of patients and the public. Ultimately, these expenses must be covered by someone.

If you are looking for funding opportunities as a researcher or commissioner, there are some places to start looking below, this is not an exhaustive list and there are often funding calls released by other organisations: 

National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) 

The NIHR funds research to improve health and care. Each of their funding programmes has a specific focus, aiming to address key areas in health, care, and public health.

Domestic funding programmes include:

Research for Patient Benefit 

Funding research around the day-to-day practice of health service and social care staff. The programme funds studies that aim to increase the effectiveness of services, provide value for money and benefit patients and the public. This is one of our programme with set funding limits.

Invention for Innovation

Translational research funding scheme aimed at medical devices, in vitro diagnostic devices and digital health technologies addressing an existing or emerging health or social care need. 

Public Health Research

Funding research to improve the health of the public and reduce inequalities. Research aims to generate evidence to inform delivery of non-NHS interventions and test practical interventions

There is also Global Health Research funding programmes and Research career funding programmes

Chief Scientist Office (CSO) offers a number of different funding streams to directly support health research in Scotland.

Medical Research Council (MRC) funds research through a range of grants, calls, highlight notices, studentships and fellowships.

Health and Care Research Wales is the Welsh Government body whose goal is to fund research that will inform care and improve the health and wealth of the people of Wales.

Public Health Agency – Health & Social Care Research and Development Directorate (HSC R&D) provides information about funding opportunities that are available to researchers working in Health & Social Care (HSC) Northern Ireland.

UK Clinical Research Collaboration (UKCRC) many different organisations fund health research in the UK. The UKCRC has developed a coherent approach to health research funding by providing a forum to coordinate the activities of funding bodies and by developing an evidence base to inform strategic planning.

UK Research Office (UKRO) is the European office of the UK Research Councils. Activities include providing details on European Commission funding opportunities.

There are about 8,800 grant-making trusts and foundations in the UK, providing around £2.1 billion in grants to charities each year.  The Association of Medical Research Charities directory contains leading medical and health research charities in the UK and a useful resource for finding a suitable charity funding.

The Wellcome TrustCancer Research UK (CRUK) and the British Heart Foundation (BHF) all host a range of funding schemes supporting individuals, teams, resources, seed ideas, places and major initiatives.

There is not a directory or easy source for commercial and private funding streams in England. You may be approached to work with a company in pharmacutical, engineering or innovation. If you work within the NHS this will be need to discussed with your governance and finance teams before any decisions are made.
