Last month we hosted a special two day gathering of the Rising Tide Positive Action Leadership Programme. This programme is designed to support and develop ethnically diverse talent across the NHS workforce in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
As part of the region’s commitment to fostering an inclusive and equitable working environment, the programme aims to empower colleagues from underrepresented backgrounds by equipping them with the skills, confidence, and networks needed to thrive in leadership roles. 30 candidates were selected from across the system, from a pool of nearly 200 applicants, to take part.
One participant said:
“The Rising Tide leadership programme is highly valuable for BME (black and minority ethnic people), helping participants clarify their career goals and recognize their leadership potential. The facilitators provided excellent support, and the first two days were especially beneficial in understanding oneself, the environment, and thriving within different cultural quadrants. I strongly encourage this programme to continue.”
The Rising Tide Programme is not just about individual development—it is about creating a ripple effect of change throughout the Hampshire and Isle of Wight footprint. By investing in diverse talent, the programme contributes to a more representative, inclusive, and effective healthcare leadership landscape.
Participants leave the programme not only with enhanced leadership skills but also with the confidence to advocate for themselves and others, ensuring that the NHS continues to grow as an organisation that values and harnesses the power of diversity.
Another participant said:
“The Rising Tide has aided in my thought process of how to lead within my strengths, using my current weaknesses as a building point. The program has highlighted the importance of positive views and thoughts regarding my own styles, ensuring a positive outlook on both myself and my work. The facilitators allowed fluid conversation throughout the days and allowed our opinion and views to be heard – most importantly allowing feedback from both my peers and the facilitators.
“Within the few days I have attended, I am more confident in articulating my thoughts on a subject matter, and feeling more confident when speaking on different points within a subject.
“The Rising Tide program in my opinion focused on reflection of previous achievements and progress, enlightening me on the progress I have made within my short leadership career. This has allowed me to appreciate myself and my own styles, and fully comprehend my strengths.
“I hope to continue learning both within myself and into the different tools and leadership techniques with the coming modules of the Rising Tide Programme’’
