"CHIE is a great tool, it enables clinicians to really streamline the care that they're offering to their patients. It enables you to provide, at that moment in time, a holistic package of care to the patient whilst reducing the clinical burden. Ensuring that all the care you provide is as safe as it can be"
- Ynez Symonds, Chief Nursing Information Officer
CHIE can present health and social care data alongside one another in a standardised and consolidated view. The availability of key documentation and alerts ensures every clinician/social care worker is able to refer to the same record and work seamlessly together across one digital solution, in any setting.
Clinicians and Social Care Teams across HIOW are more likely to find clinically and socially relevant information faster, providing more informed and improved care and decision making. This can reduce delays in treatment and reduce clinical risk for patients/clients and save the patient time having to repeat details to different professionals.
It means NHS and Social Care staff have a single point of reference where shared information is expected, thereby improving patient outcomes and experiences. It saves staff logging in to multiple systems, often not knowing if patients/clients have open referrals (providing contact details of services the patient has recently interacted with), wasting valuable clinical and social care time. CHIE frees up resources and releases time to care.
The CHIE record can help streamline and improve hospital discharge planning and used to inform support and care management in the community as well as ensuring the patient is provided care in the most appropriate health or care setting (and if admitted to hospital, an alert to enable home care visits to be paused).
Every year CHIE undertakes an annual benefits survey amongst its user base. The CHIE User Surveys in 2023 and 2024 confirmed:
- Staff consider CHIE supports the provision and delivery of high-quality care
- Staff said using CHIE saved them time
- Staff said using CHIE reduces the need to contact GPs for information
- Staff said using CHIE reduces the need to contact other services for information
- Over half of users said using CHIE reduces clinical safety risk
Other benefits reported:
- Quicker access to clinical letters, discharge summaries and medications from outside their organisation the clinician works in.
- Access to health and care information in one place reducing the need to ask the patient and in circumstances when the patient cannot always recall information correctly.
- Saves time phoning GP/Hospital to find out patient information/results/medications/plans/admissions.
- Can see what services the patient / client is currently involved with/previously had interaction with.
- Accessing information to help support safeguarding coordination, development of future care packages and protecting citizens and front-line staff.
On average there’s a “conservative” time saving of 22 minutes per day per user from reduced calls/correspondence with other services which equates to a £6.8m efficiency saving across HIOW.
Your information is used by health and social care professionals across the region. Access to your medical and social care history in CHIE helps staff provide a safer, faster, more informed service to you and your family.
